The United Nations mandated University for Peace is collecting old and new iPhones for its PeaceRooms program. They will be used to pilot a new Smartphone curriculum component. The program will work with students from at-risk communities in Costa Rica, Ethiopia and Washington D.C and will use the latest in peer-to peer learning, gaming, and Smartphone technology to (1) transform the way students deal with conflict (2) develop powerful cross cultural relationships and concepts of global citizenship.

Donate your iPhone or iTouch today and make a difference in the life of a child tomorrow.

iphone_homeWhat is PeaceRooms?

PeaceRooms is an innovative digital media program that allows students to build cross-cultural relationships and develop into responsible global citizens. Students participate in secure long-term virtual partnerships with classrooms in other countries and interactively learn the core concepts of peace education and conflict transformation through real life experience. In a world ridden with violence, we create and deliver new technological tools for young people to explore their global identities and transform their approaches to dealing with conflict. Read More

Why iPhones?

PeaceRooms currently uses laptops and social networking platforms like epals.com and ning.com to teach students about digital literacy, global citizenship, and conflict transformation. While laptops are effective in most contexts, there are many parts of the world that simply do not have access to this technology despite numerous efforts from organizations like One Laptop per Child. However, the cellphone is becoming increasingly universal. Smartphones are cheap, rugged, flexible, and mobile. The iPhone platform is particularly innovative in developing the next generation of educational tools, games, and experiences.

Sample Projects:

Mobile Games for Social Change: A handful of applications for language acquisition and geography already exist for the iPhone.  We plan to work with developers to create basic applications for the iPhone that teach students about global citizenship through games.

Peer-to-Peer Connectivity/Networking: In the iPhone 3.0 software package release, applications will have new and exciting possibilities for peer-to-peer learning across great distances. We plan to bring students from different countries together by integrating the iPhone platform into the classroom space and working with educators to construct curriculum around its use.
